Draft Interim Guidelines for
Cataloging Electronic Resources |
| DESCRIPTION: |
"The purpose of DCM B19 is to establish an interim set
of guidelines to be used for cataloging electronic resources in the Library of Congress
based on a common conceptual context and a common terminology. The intent of the
guidelines is to apply to resources of divergent character produced under varying
circumstances and managed by different entities, a set of conventions for bibliographic
control that will enable generalized, standard practice to the extent judged practicable
in a diverse, dynamic environment. DCM B19 attempts to be more than just a "how
to" manual. It also endeavors to engage the electronic world on a broader scale by
providing a conceptual framework for treating electronic resources."--Purpose and

Proposal No.
93-4 : Changes to the USMARC Bibliographic Format (Computer Files) to Accommodate
Online Information Resources |
| DESCRIPTION: |
"This proposal attempts to accommodate one category of
online information resources in the USMARC format for computer files, electronic data
resources (software, electronic text and data files, bibliographic databases, etc.). It
proposes the following: 1) adding four codes to 008/26 (Type of computer file and changing
the definition of two; 2) broadening the use of field 256 (File Characteristics) to
include more specific descriptors; 3) making field 516 (Type of File or Data Note)
obsolete; and 4) adding a new field 856 to the Holdings/Bibliographic formats for
electronic location and access information. It does not cover online systems and services
(e.g. campus wide information systems, Telnet sites, bulletin boards, etc.), although some
data elements may be applicable to those."--Summary. |

Paper No. 69 : Accommodating Online Systems and Services in USMARC |
| DESCRIPTION: |
"This paper discusses whether there is a need for USMARC
records that describe and provide access to online systems and services. Assuming that
these items need to be accommodated in USMARC, it explores the use of either the Community
Information Format with bibliographic fields added or Bibliographic Format with community
information fields added. The new field 856 would be used for location and access. A list
of data elements and their mapping to fields in either (or both) formats is included.
Questions concerning record creation and linking between the record for an electronic data
resource and the online systems and services record are discussed."--Summary. |

in Definition of Computer File in Leader/06 (Type of record) in the USMARC Bibliographic
Format |
| DESCRIPTION: |
"This paper explores issues on coding MARC records for
computer files in Leader/06. Currently code "m" is defined broadly as any body
of information encoded in a manner which allows it to be processed by a computer. It is
suggested that the definition be changed so that code "m" is used only for
executable software. If this were implemented, when an item has two or more attributes,
one of which is computer file, the record would be coded for the characteristic other than
the computer file aspect. Questions are raised concerning the use of the Leader/06 after
format integration with the availability of 006."--Summary. |

when a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is recorded in subfield $u. The second change is a
redefinition of subfield $q (File transfer mode) to File format type. This would result in

856 provides electronic location information and the entity described in the bibliographic
record. Three values are proposed: value # (No information provided); value 0 (Electronic
location of resource described); value 1 (Electronic location of online version of
resource described); value 2 (Related online resource); and value 8 (No display constant
generated). The use of subfield $3 (Materials specified) with these values is clarified.

the other to redefine as just computer software. In addition, it proposes opening up the
definition of Mixed materials (code "p") to include electronic mixed materials,

recording a URN in a MARC bibliographic record. For the current need to record a handle,
field 856 subfield $u is used. In the future fields for other identifiers may be used
(e.g. ISBN, ISSN, SICI), and at that time a content designator (perhaps subfield $u in the
appropriate field) may be added to indicate that the identifier serves as a URN. This
proposal suggests changing the name of 856$u to URI to accommodate both URLs and URNs and
adding an indicator value blank (#) to show that that the access method is not provided

OCLC PURL |
| DESCRIPTION: |
"A PURL is a Persistent Uniform Resource Locator.
Functionally, a PURL is a URL. However, instead of pointing directly to the location of an
Internet resource, a PURL points to an intermediate resolution service. The PURL
resolution service associates the PURL with the actual URL and returns that URL to the
client. The client can then complete the URL transaction in the normal fashion. In Web
parlance, this is a standard HTTP redirect."--Title screen. OCLC provides free
download of the PURL software. |
