TITLE: Discussion Paper No. 92 : Change in Definition of Computer File in Leader/06 (Type of record) in the USMARC Bibliographic Format
DESCRIPTION: "This paper explores issues on coding MARC records for computer files in Leader/06. Currently code "m" is defined broadly as any body of information encoded in a manner which allows it to be processed by a computer. It is suggested that the definition be changed so that code "m" is used only for executable software. If this were implemented, when an item has two or more attributes, one of which is computer file, the record would be coded for the characteristic other than the computer file aspect. Questions are raised concerning the use of the Leader/06 after format integration with the availability of 006."--Summary.

TITLE: Proposal No. 96-1 : Changes to Field 856 (Electronic Location and Access) in the USMARC Formats
DESCRIPTION: "This paper proposes two changes to Field 856. The first suggests the addition of a first indicator (Access method) value 8 for Other, to be used when a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is recorded in subfield $u. The second change is a redefinition of subfield $q (File transfer mode) to File format type. This would result in recording the type of file, or MIME type in subfield $q, instead of the current definition that requires recording "ASCII" or "binary" to indicate what mode of transfer is necessary."--Summary.

TITLE: Proposal No. 97-1 : Definition of Second Indicator (Relationship to Source) in Field 856 (Electronic Location and Access) in the USMARC Formats
DESCRIPTION: "This proposal suggests the definition of a second indicator in field 856 to characterize the relationship between the entity for which field 856 provides electronic location information and the entity described in the bibliographic record. Three values are proposed: value # (No information provided); value 0 (Electronic location of resource described); value 1 (Electronic location of online version of resource described); value 2 (Related online resource); and value 8 (No display constant generated). The use of subfield $3 (Materials specified) with these values is clarified. In addition, the proposal suggests the inclusion of a value for HTTP in the first indicator position."--Summary.

TITLE: Proposal No. 97-3 : Redefinition of Code "m" (Computer File) in Leader/06 in the USMARC Bibliographic Format
DESCRIPTION: "This paper explores the redefinition of code "m" in Leader/06 (Type of record) to code electronic items for content rather than carrier. It reviews previous discussions of this issue and considers how the proposed redefinition might affect the use of fields 008 and 006. Two options are proposed: one to redefine code "m" to include software, numeric data or a mixture of forms, and the other to redefine as just computer software. In addition, it proposes opening up the definition of Mixed materials (code "p") to include electronic mixed materials, and to change the name of the Books 008 to 'Textual (Nonserial)'."--Summary.

TITLE: Proposal No. 97-9 : Renaming of subfield 856$u to accommodate URNs
DESCRIPTION: "This paper proposes a variety of approaches when recording a URN in a MARC bibliographic record. For the current need to record a handle, field 856 subfield $u is used. In the future fields for other identifiers may be used (e.g. ISBN, ISSN, SICI), and at that time a content designator (perhaps subfield $u in the appropriate field) may be added to indicate that the identifier serves as a URN. This proposal suggests changing the name of 856$u to URI to accommodate both URLs and URNs and adding an indicator value blank (#) to show that that the access method is not provided for use with a URN."--Summary.

TITLE: Proposal No. 98-6 : Definition of value s (electronic) in 008 character positions
DESCRIPTION: "This paper proposes that a code be added in the 008 to indicate that the carrier of an item is electronic. This request results from the change of definition of Leader/06 code m (Computer file), so that electronic items may be identified in a similar way to microforms. The paper proposes that value s be added to 008/23 (Form of item) in Books, Music, Serials, and Mixed Materials; that a new character position 008/29 be added to Maps and Visual Materials (with the same codes as in 008/23); as an option, that value s (Electronic) be added in Maps 008/33-34 and in Visual Materials 008/29; and that value s be added to 008/22 (Form of original item) in Serials."--Summary.

TITLE: OCLC PURL
DESCRIPTION: "A PURL is a Persistent Uniform Resource Locator. Functionally, a PURL is a URL. However, instead of pointing directly to the location of an Internet resource, a PURL points to an intermediate resolution service. The PURL resolution service associates the PURL with the actual URL and returns that URL to the client. The client can then complete the URL transaction in the normal fashion.
