Ending Punctuation for Bibliographic Data

(This document is no longer maintained as of December 13, 2000)

Information in this document is mainly compiled from the USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data: Including Guidelines for Content Designation prepared by the Library of Congress Network Development and MARC Standards Office. Some examples are supplied or modified by the author to clarify the points.

Punctuation - "The use of standard marks and signs in writing and printing to separate words into sentences, clauses, and phrases in order to clarify meaning."--The American Heritage Dictionary. Based on the examples shown in the USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data, when the input convention for a particular field is "Ends with a period" or "Ends with a period unless another mark of punctuation is present", the field ends with a period even when closing parenthesis, closing angle bracket, or closing bracket is present unless these marks are specified.
